This Sunday is the Second Sunday of Lent. This Sunday's Gospel is John 3:1-17. You can read the entire text below.
I invite you during Lent this year to make this church season a time of heart work. In Jesus world, the heart was the center of thought and feelings, where wisdom was created and lived. The heart work of Lent is to be more open to the presence and workings of God in our lives, our community, and our world. All of this calls us to live out our baptismal promise in Christ and be a light to the world through Grace, Forgiveness and Love.
Nicodemus (a Pharisee) comes to Jesus with a yearning from his heart, but doesn't understand that it is coming from his heart. He approaches Jesus as if he (Jesus) is a question of scriptural law code. Jesus challenges him with this question, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit." Nicodemus is frustrated and confused by this question and tries to get Jesus to talk with a reasoning he can understand but Jesus keeps his conversation centered in heart and spirit.
Nicodemus with all his education and moral understanding of Judaic Law and tradition does not comprehend what Jesus is inviting him into in this dialogue now. Later we learn that he becomes a follower and true believer. Sometimes (usually) it takes the heart time to talk to and convince the mind so the spirit can get through.
So, follow your heart. Let the light of God's Grace shine in everything you do. Let the light of God's real Forgiveness shine in everything you do. Let the light of God's Love shine in everything you do. Blessings and peace be with you all!
See you in church,
Interim Pastor Craig Storlie
