According to what we’ve been taught, both inside and outside the church, staying put in the dark is something we are to avoid at all cost. In other words, the “dark” is a bad place to be. There are numerous scriptures that confirm this: John 1:5 – “God is light and in him there is no darkness at all.” Matthew 22:13 -“Then the king said to the attendants. ‘Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
As counter intuitive and unbiblical as it may seem, the sermon this coming Sunday is going to lift up the idea that staying put in the dark is not necessarily a negative experience. In fact, as Thomas (both the Biblical Thomas as well as the one writing this article) is going to discover in our Gospel for this coming Sunday (John 20:19-31), darkness can be the place where God does some of his most creative work.
As always, I look forward to exploring the topic of “darkness” with you, my Prince of Peace friends, this coming Sunday.
Peace – Pastor Tom Smith
